Einstein House
One of the greatest physicists of our time, Albert Einstein, spent a share of his life in Bern. Einstein and his wife, Mileva rented a small flat on the second floor of Kramgasse No. 49 between 1903 and 1905. In 1977, the Albert Einstein Society rented the flat and restored it to the original version depicting Einstein year's at the apartment. Today, the flat serves as a public tribute for the scientific achievements of the great scientist.
Einstein's years in Bern are considered to be some of the most crucial of his career. It was in 1905 the scientist presented his ìannus mirabilisî papers changing the views of space, time, and matter. Einstein also came up with his theory of relativity while residing in the old city.
In 2005, the Einstein House underwent minor renovations in honor of its 100-year anniversary. Through sponsors and local partners, the exhibition was rearranged to better address its visitors emotionally and depict the environment in which Einstein wrote is papers. The entrance and stairway to the flat were also renovated. Now they feature an illustration of the Milk Way for guests to view as the approach the flat. The flat itself also features several pictures and texts written by Einstein during his stay. Finally, on the third floor of the building, there is an exhibition detailing Einstein's biography and his life's work.
The Einstein House is situated at the centre of Bern, approximately 200 meters below the Clock Tower. Albert Einstein died April 18, 1955 in Princeton, America.
