Grosser Muristalden

One of the main attractions of Grosser Muristalden is the Bear Pits. According to legend, Berchtold von Zahringen, the founder of Bern, killed a bear on the Aare Peninsula. From this story the name of the town, Bern (meaning Bear in German), was derived. The Bear Pits have been situated in their current location since 1857. In 1996, the pits underwent renovations to better provide the animals with a natural habitat. Currently the pits house two Pyrenean brown bears. There names are Tana and Pedro. The bears are out in the open daily for the public to see. Visitors can even purchase bear food to feed the large creatures.
